Why Claude Is More Than Just a Chatbot
When most people think of Claude, they picture a chatbox — you type a question, Claude answers. And that's still true. But Anthropic has been quietly building something much bigger: a full ecosystem of AI products that can do real work, not just answer questions.
As of early 2026, there are three distinct Claude products — Claude Chat, Claude Cowork, and Claude Code — each designed for a different kind of user and a different kind of task. And within Cowork, two brand-new features — Dispatch and Schedule — have just launched, pushing Claude firmly into the territory of autonomous AI agents.
"Claude responds. Cowork and Code act. That's the fundamental difference."
— The simplest way to think about the Claude ecosystem
This guide will walk you through all three products in plain English — what they do, who they're for, how they're different, and when to use each one. Let's start at the beginning.
Claude Chat — Your Everyday AI Assistant
Claude Chat is the product most people are already using. It's the conversational AI accessible at claude.ai, the mobile app, and the desktop app. Think of it as a brilliantly knowledgeable colleague you can ask anything — it responds in real time to your messages.
What can Claude Chat do?
- Answer questions on virtually any topic with nuanced, well-reasoned responses
- Analyze documents — paste in a PDF, research paper, or long email and ask questions about it
- Write and edit — blog posts, emails, reports, code snippets, marketing copy
- Brainstorm and strategize — product ideas, business plans, creative projects
- Search the web (with web search enabled) for up-to-date information
- Generate visualizations — charts, diagrams, and inline graphics directly in the chat
Projects and Memory
One of the most underrated Chat features is Projects — persistent workspaces where Claude remembers context across conversations. You can add documents, instructions, and background information to a Project and Claude will always have that context available whenever you chat within it. This is hugely useful for ongoing work like a newsletter, a software product, or a research area.
Claude Chat does not have access to your local files or computer. It can only work with what you paste or upload directly into the conversation. That's what makes Cowork and Code different — they can actually reach into your machine.
Availability & Pricing
Claude Chat is available on the Free plan (with usage limits), as well as Pro ($20/month) and Max ($100–$200/month) plans which unlock faster responses, higher limits, and access to the most capable models including Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6.
Claude Cowork — The Autonomous Desktop Agent
Cowork is where Claude stops responding and starts acting. It's a desktop-first product — built into the Claude Desktop app for macOS and Windows — that gives Claude permission to access your local files, connect to your apps, and complete multi-step tasks from start to finish.
Think of it as the difference between asking a colleague "how would you write this report?" versus handing the task to them and saying "please write it, here's the folder." Cowork handles the latter.
The Cowork workflow — you describe the goal, Claude plans and executes it using your files and connected apps.
What makes Cowork different from Chat?
The key distinction is file access and task execution. In Chat, Claude can only see what you share in the conversation window. In Cowork, you grant Claude permission to specific folders on your computer — and Claude can actually read files, create documents, open Chrome, interact with connected services like Slack and Gmail, and deliver a finished result.
The Cowork connector ecosystem
Cowork ships with over 38 native connectors including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion, GitHub, Figma, Trello, Asana, Dropbox, and more. No API setup required — just authorize and Claude can act across all of them in a single task. This is what separates it from a simple file browser: Cowork can orchestrate actions across your entire digital workspace.
Safety & Permissions
Every Cowork session runs in an isolated sandbox — separate from your main operating system. Claude always shows you the plan before executing anything significant, and asks for permission before accessing new applications. You choose exactly which folders and connectors Claude can touch. Cowork activity is also stored locally on your device, not sent to Anthropic's servers.
Claude Code — The Developer's Command Line
Claude Code is the third product in the ecosystem, and it's designed specifically for software developers. Rather than a desktop GUI, it operates as a command-line interface (CLI) — you install it, point it at a codebase, and talk to it from the terminal.
# Install Claude Code $ npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code # Start a session in your project folder $ cd my-project && claude # Ask Claude to do real work You: Refactor the auth module to use JWT tokens and add unit tests Claude: Reading 14 files across /src/auth/... Writing /src/auth/jwt.ts... Updating /tests/auth.test.ts... ✓ Done. 3 files modified, 24 tests added.
What Claude Code can do
- Read entire codebases — Claude understands your project structure, not just one file
- Write, edit, and refactor code across multiple files in a single operation
- Run terminal commands — install packages, run test suites, execute build scripts
- Create and review pull requests directly in your Git workflow
- Run autonomously via GitHub Actions — trigger Claude Code as part of your CI/CD pipeline
Local vs Cloud sessions
Claude Code offers two modes: Local sessions run entirely on your machine with direct access to your filesystem; Remote/Cloud sessions run on Anthropic's infrastructure, meaning they continue even if you close your laptop. This makes remote sessions perfect for long-running tasks like large refactors, test suite runs, or dependency migrations.
Claude Code also has its own Scheduled tasks feature (similar to Cowork's Schedule), with the added option of cloud-hosted tasks that don't require your machine to be awake. It's the more powerful option if you're comfortable in the terminal.
Side-by-Side Comparison
Here's a clear breakdown of how all three products compare across the dimensions that matter most:

New: Cowork Dispatch — Control Claude from Your Phone New
Dispatch is the most exciting recent addition to the Claude ecosystem. Launched as a research preview in March 2026, it answers a question users have been asking for a while: "Can I use Cowork on my phone?"
The answer is: not directly — but close. Dispatch lets you send tasks to Cowork from your phone, and Claude executes them on your desktop. Your phone becomes the remote control. Your desktop does the work.
Cowork Dispatch lets you send tasks from your phone — Claude executes them on your desktop using a persistent, never-resetting thread.
How to set up Dispatch
Update Claude Desktop
Make sure you're on the latest version of the Claude Desktop app (macOS or Windows x64). A "Dispatch" option will appear in the Cowork sidebar after updating.
Install the Claude mobile app
Download the latest Claude app on iOS or Android. Existing users will need to update to the latest version.
Scan the QR code
In Dispatch on your desktop, click "Get started" and scan the QR code with your phone. The two devices will pair instantly — no network configuration needed.
Start dispatching tasks
A "Dispatch" entry will appear in your mobile app's sidebar. Tap it, send a task, and Claude handles it on your desktop — you'll get the result when it's done.
What makes Dispatch special: one persistent thread
Unlike regular Claude sessions that start fresh each time, Dispatch maintains a single continuous thread that doesn't reset. Claude retains context from your previous tasks — so you can say "based on that report you drafted last Tuesday, now create a slide deck from it" and Claude will know exactly what you're referring to.
Dispatch is a research preview. Your desktop must be awake and Claude Desktop must be open for tasks to execute. Currently there's no way to start a new thread or manage multiple threads. File attachments from mobile aren't yet supported — describe paths instead. These limitations will improve over time.
New: Cowork Schedule — Recurring Tasks on Autopilot New
If Dispatch is about working from anywhere, Schedule is about working without being there at all. Cowork Schedule lets you set up tasks that run automatically on a recurring cadence — daily, weekly, on weekdays, hourly, or on demand — with no cron syntax, no scripts, and no YAML configuration.
You describe the task once. Pick how often it should run. Cowork handles the rest.
How to set up a scheduled task
There are two methods. The easiest: open any Cowork task, type /schedule into the input, and Claude will walk you through the setup with a few questions — what to run, when to run it, which folder to work in, which model to use. Confirm, and it's scheduled. Alternatively, click "Scheduled" in the Cowork sidebar and fill in the form directly.
Real-world examples of scheduled tasks
Morning briefing
DailyPull yesterday's Slack highlights, unread emails, and calendar for today — then compile into a 5-minute briefing document.
Weekly metrics report
WeeklyPull performance data from a spreadsheet, update the weekly report template, and save it to Google Drive every Friday morning.
Competitor digest
WeekdaysSearch for industry news and competitor updates each weekday, summarize the key developments, and append to a running research document.
Downloads organizer
DailyGo through the Downloads folder every evening, categorize files, move them to the right project folders, and flag anything that needs action.
Cowork Schedule supports five cadences — set it up by typing /schedule in any Cowork task.
One important thing to know
Scheduled tasks require your computer to be awake and Claude Desktop to be open. If your machine is asleep when a task is due, Cowork will skip it and re-run it automatically once you wake your machine. This is different from Claude Code's cloud-scheduled tasks, which can run even while your laptop is closed.
Which Claude Product Should You Use?
Here's a simple decision framework based on what you're trying to accomplish:
Use Claude Chat if…
You want quick answers, writing help, analysis, brainstorming, or any task where you're happy to paste your content into a chat window. The free plan works for most casual users.
Use Cowork if…
You want Claude to work with your actual files and apps. You're a knowledge worker — writer, marketer, ops, manager — who wants autonomous multi-step tasks without learning any code.
Use Claude Code if…
You're a developer who lives in the terminal. You want Claude to understand your entire codebase, run tests, manage Git, and integrate into CI/CD pipelines.
And if you're on Pro or Max and already using Cowork — enable Dispatch for mobile control and set up at least one scheduled task. Even a simple daily briefing that saves you 20 minutes every morning compounds to over 120 hours a year.
"The first time you prompt Claude to build a competitor digest, it's great. The magic is when it just shows up in your inbox every morning without you thinking about it."
— From the Cowork community
Final Thoughts
Anthropic has built something thoughtful with the Claude ecosystem. Rather than cramming every feature into a single product, they've separated concerns cleanly — a conversational layer for everyday use, a desktop agent for autonomous knowledge work, and a developer tool for engineering teams. Each is the best version of what it needs to be.
Dispatch and Schedule are the most exciting recent additions because they shift the mental model from "AI you talk to" to "AI that works for you." You don't have to be present for the work to happen. That's a genuinely different relationship with AI, and it's only going to get more capable from here.
